When we think of a cooling system, we naturally think of a radiator or thermostat, but this system is made up of several components that work together.

In simple terms, the expansion tank is a "reserve" of liquid. When the system heats up and the pressure rises in the radiator, the excess liquid is expelled into the reservoir, and when the circuit cools down, the liquid returns to the radiator, so that you always have the right level.

And without this tank, the liquid would be evacuated, but not returned.

But over time, with constant heating and cooling, the plastic of the tank tends to cook and become brittle, sometimes cracking or even exploding in the most extreme cases.

And, of course, if it's dropped, it can be damaged.
