Ahhhh! The famous carburettor that scares so many people...

A carburettor is a kind of Swiss clockwork. It doesn't look like it, but a carburettor is an extremely precise part.

And so are the parts that make it up. There are gaskets, needles, ...a whole lot of little things.

But these parts wear out over time. 

The needle which is used to let the petrol through (a bit like on a toilet flush) gets marked by being in contact with its seat, and the gaskets in a general way can let petrol or air through depending on its location.

The result is a motorbike that has petrol overflowing from the overflows, from the tanks, or even leaking into the engine, a motorbike that sputters.

But original gaskets are often very expensive and can deter you from doing the repairs quickly.
